Differences between the Jeep Cherokee and Grand Cherokee

If you have paid attention to Jeep at all, then you have probably heard of the Jeep Cherokee. However, you may be wondering what are the differences between the Jeep Cherokee and Grand Cherokee? Are they different trim levels? Are they different models? We have your answers right here.

Is the Grand Cherokee a Cherokee trim level?

Most car, crossover, and SUV models come in multiple trim levels. Trucks have even been known to take the number of trim levels to the extreme. It’s only reasonable that some people may assume the two Cherokee SUVs on the market are the same model and just different trim levels. However, that is not the case.

Once you see the current Jeep Cherokee and the current Jeep Grand Cherokee side-by-side, it is obvious that these are two very different vehicles designed for different types of car buyers.

The Cherokee has a sleek appearance with sharp lines and pointed headlights. The Grand Cherokee on the other hand stays much closer to the Jeep roots with its iconic grille and slightly boxy form, but looks are not the only differences between these two models.

Though both SUVs sport seating for up to five people, the Grand Cherokee stays true to its name and offers more interior room. The 2017 Grand Cherokee also offers a few more available features including a diesel option, a 19-speaker premium audio system, and an SRT performance trim.

The big difference between these two vehicles comes down to the capabilities and what’s under the hood. The Cherokee has two available engine options from an efficient 2.4-liter engine with 184 horsepower to a 3.2-liter V6 with 271 horsepower. The latter of which gives the Cherokee a towing capacity of 2,041 kg.

The Grand Cherokee improves on its little brother’s offering with four engine options that include a 3.0-liter EcoDiesel V6, a 3.6-liter V6, a 5.7-liter V8 HEMI, and a 6.4-liter V8 SRT HEMI. These options provide a towing capability of up to 3,265 kg.
